Descriptions of Items Being Tested:
1. Height:
The height of each participant will be measured and recorded by combine staff.
2. Weight:
The weight of each participant will be recorded by combine staff.
3. Bench Press:
This test will measure the upper-body strength of the participant.
Procedure: The individual player will be given a choice to lift one of three selected weight set (135pds, 185pds, or 225pds). The participant will be given points based on the level of weight he chooses and the amount of reps he successfully completes.
4. Medicine Ball Toss:
This test will demonstrate the participant’s upper-body strength and power.
Procedure: The participant will kneel down with his back straight, chest facing the throwing lane, thighs parallel and feet positioned so that his shoelaces are flat or flush to the floor. The player will grab a 3kg medicine ball at his sides with both hands he will then raise the ball overhead, extending the arms. In a coordinated motion resembling an explosive chest pass, the player will release the ball forward using a trajectory of about 30° to 40° above horizontal. Keeping his elbows elevated during the throw to insure proper release and maximal distance. Knees should not move off pad prior to throw. Athlete finishes with arms fully extended and palms outward, following through with both hands landing in front of line to support torso.
5. 40 Yard Dash:
This test will measure the overall speed of the participant.
Procedure: The participant will line up on the starting line with an electric timer synchronized on his person. Once the participant crosses the finish line his time will be recorded and annotated.
6. Short Shuttle:
This test will measure the speed, explosion, and body control of the participant. This test will also demonstrate the player’s ability to change direction (agility).
Procedure: Three marker cones are placed along a line five yards apart. The participant straddles the middle line and puts one hand down in a three-point stance. The participant can start by going either to the right or left direction. For example, on the signal 'Go' the player turns and runs five yards to the right side and touches the line with his right hand. He then runs 10 yards to his left and touches the other line with his left hand, then finally turns and finishes by running back through the start/finish line. The participant is required to touch the line at each turn.
7. Vertical Jump:
This test will measure how high the participant can elevate himself off the ground from a stand-still position.
Procedure: The athlete’s vertical jump will be measured by an infrared laser placed at ground level. When an athlete jumps and breaks the plane of the laser with his hand, the height at which this occurs is measured and recorded.
8. Broad Jump:
This test will measure the participant’s explosive leg power.
Procedure: The participant stands behind a line marked on the ground with feet slightly apart. A two foot take-off and landing is used, with swinging of the arms and bending of the knees to provide forward drive. The player attempts to jump as far as possible, landing on both feet without falling backwards. The athlete cannot step back. The measurement of the jump will be recorded.
